Your Perimenopause Era: Why Working Out Alone Suddenly Feels Impossible (And Why That's Not Laziness)

Written by a coach and studio owner living the experience, Rachel Seay

If you're in your 40s and 50’s and you've noticed you can barely drag yourself through a solo workout anymore, even though you used to love it, I want you to hear this first: you are not losing your discipline. Something real is happening in your body, and there's a reason a group class might be solving a problem that willpower never could.

It's not just tiredness. It's motivation itself.

Most of what gets said about perimenopause and exercise focuses on fatigue. Real fatigue, yes. But there's a second thing happening that doesn't get talked about enough, and it's more specific than being tired. It's a drop in the actual drive to start.

Estrogen and progesterone don't just affect your cycle. They affect the brain chemistry behind motivation, including dopamine, the chemical that gives you that little internal push to get off the couch and go.

When those hormones start fluctuating in your late 30s and 40s, that push can get quieter. You still want to want to work out. You remember loving it. The desire to have done it is still there. It's the desire to begin that goes missing.

This is why so many women describe the same strange thing: they can teach a class, sweat through a class, show up for a friend at 6am, but they cannot get themselves to do the exact same workout alone in their living room. That's not a contradiction. That's the symptom.

Why a class works when solo doesn't

A group fitness class removes the one part that's actually broken. You don't have to generate your own motivation to start, because the room, the time slot, the instructor, and the people around you do that work for you. All you have to do is show up, and once you're moving, your body remembers how to finish. And we can make it enjoyable getting there. Pour yourself a to-go coffee and enjoy the drive there too. Take the friction out of it. Think of the whole thing as a little “you” time

Think of it like this. On your own, every single step of a workout requires a decision: decide to change clothes, decide which workout, decide to actually begin, decide to keep going when it gets hard. Every one of those decisions is a small ask of a motivation system that's running low. In a class, almost none of those decisions are yours to make. Someone else picked the time, the space, the music, the moves. You just have to arrive.

That's not a workaround for people who are weak willed. That's a smart accommodation for a hormonal reality, the same way you'd adjust your diet or your sleep habits during this stage of life.

What this means for how you show up for yourself

If solo workouts have quietly stopped happening and you've been quietly blaming yourself for it, consider letting that go. The problem was never your discipline. It was that you were trying to solve a motivation problem with more motivation, which doesn't work when the supply itself is running low.

💛 The fix isn't to try harder alone. It's to build in the structure that used to live inside your own head, but now needs to live outside it for a while.

  • A friend expecting you.
  • A class on the calendar.
  • An instructor who starts the clock whether you feel like it or not.

None of that is cheating. It's just working with your body instead of against it.

And there's a good chance it won't be forever. This stretch of shifting hormones is a season, not a life sentence. In the meantime, if showing up somewhere with other people is what gets you moving, that's not a lesser version of fitness. That might be exactly the right one for where you are right now.

At Inner Fit, our goal is to help you through this season of your life. And as the owner of Inner Fit, and currently living this experience, I too love to go to my coaches classes and I feel so good after.

I used to get so mad at myself, but that was not productive, and reflecting on past me who loved to get up and exercise was also not productive so I working with my body now. I invite you to too!
